SAN JUAN COUNTY, N.M. — The identities of the three people killed by floodwaters on the Navajo Nation were revealed Sept. 18. They include a 7-year-old girl and two women.
All three died after flash floods swept them away Sept. 16 in Two Grey Hills on the Navajo Nation.
The victims were grandmother Elsie Begay, her best friend Dora Franklin, and Begay’s 7-year-old granddaugher, Lucy Allison Mike.
Begay and Franklin both worked for the Department of Education.
Mike was in the third grade and was set to celebrate her birthday Sept. 22. She had recently been crowned Miss Sanostee Day School on Sept. 4.
