The Gallup Police Department received multiple calls from concerned citizens about unidentified drones flying over residential areas Sept. 8. The drones were reportedly seen flying from 9 pm to 2 am.
In a press release, The Gallup Police Department said the drones weren’t theirs, and that they didn’t know of any other law enforcement agencies using drones in the area at the time.
They advised anyone who sees an unidentified drone can call Metro Dispatch at (505) 722-2002.
While no specific city ordinance governs civilian drone use, local trespassing laws may still apply.
All drone operations in the U.S. are subject to the Federal Aviation Administration regulations. Drones weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) must be registered with the FAA via the FAA DroneZone website. Registration costs $5, remains valid for three years, and requires the registration number to be clearly marked on the exterior of the drone to ensure accountability.
