Gallup Police posted a warning on Facebook Sept. 8 of a bear sighting near the Canyon De Chelly area within the Indian Hills subdivision. The sighting occurred around 1:30 am.
The Department of Game and Fish has been notified, and the Gallup Police Department is asking the public to remain vigilant.
When there are bears in the area, use these helpful tips to keep yourself and your belongings safe:
Secure garbage: Store trash in bear-proof cans and put them out only on the morning of pickup.
Clean up yards: Remove bird feeders during bear active seasons, and never leave pet food outside.
Manage smells: Keep barbecue grills clean and store scented items like sunscreen or toiletries securely.
Keep animals inside or leashed.
If you do encounter a bear, stay calm, don’t run, and quietly leave the area. You can also use an air horn to scare the bear away.
