Four people are dead after a wrong-way crash near Gallup Oct. 4.
New Mexico State Police responded to a crash on Interstate 40 after a vehicle going westbound crossed the median into oncoming eastbound traffic, hitting two other cars before catching on fire around 4:30 pm.
Police said three passengers in another car who were from Hawaii, 68-year-old Wayne Viverios, 51-year-old Lilinoe Viverios, and 22-year-old Lilinoe Viverios, plus the driver of the vehicle that caused the crash, died on scene. The driver of the second vehicle hit was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Loved ones told Hawaii News Now that Wayne and Luana were married for over 26 years. Together, they had Lilinoe, who was 22 at the time of the crash, and a son, Kaikoa, 26.
Kaikoa was not with them on the trip, and was on Oahu when the crash happened. Loved ones say he also has an older stepbrother, Wayne’s son, Aren. Both are in shock over the tragedy.
A GoFundMe to help with funeral costs has been set up, bringing in over $41,000 so far. A Meal Train fundraiser has also been started.
