SANTA FE — State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya was unanimously re-elected as Western Region Vice President of the National Association of State Treasurers during the 2026 NAST Annual Conference for the second consecutive year.
The Vice President serves as a voting board member on the NAST Board of Directors. A person can serve two consecutive one-year terms in the role before being term-limited. The position is responsible for representing the region on the board of directors and providing oversight of NAST’s finances and programs.
The board meets virtually every other month and may hold an in-person meeting in conjunction with a NAST conference. As Vice President, Montoya is responsible for leading and representing state treasurers from 13 states and three territories within the western region of the U.S., which includes Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. These areas make up the NAST Western Region Committee.
The Western Region Committee in turn provides a forum for member states to hold meetings and events, exchange insights, and address shared challenges before bringing matters forward to the NAST Board of Directors.
“It is an honor to have the trust and respect from my colleagues to serve as NAST’s Western Region Vice President. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue this important work,” Montoya said. “Our first year was an incredible opportunity to collaborate with fellow state treasurers, share ideas and perspectives, and work together to address the economic opportunities and challenges facing our states.”
During the recent 2026 NAST Annual Conference, treasurers and state finance officials approved several action items and resolutions, including:
- A resolution supporting enhancements to the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act;
- A resolution supporting Roth IRA Rollover Flexibility to Strengthen Retirement Security
- An action item approving a network name change from “College Savings Plans Network” to “The 529 Network”
