The City of Gallup is urging all residents and traveling motorists to exercise heightened caution during periods of heavy rain, runoff, or localized flooding.
When you encounter deep standing water, or water flowing across any roadway, do not attempt to drive through it. Even a small amount of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway or cause sudden mechanical failure.
TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN. This warning is especially critical at night, when moving water is extremely difficult to see or judge. What may appear shallow can conceal deep erosion, debris, or fast moving currents.
To protect yourself and others:
- Avoid flooded roadways and seek alternate routes.
- Never drive around barricades or warning devices.
- Slow down and remain alert for washouts, debris, and unexpected hazards.
- During adverse weather, stay home if at all possible.
Remaining off the roads reduces risk to you, emergency responders, and other motorists.
Remember that 911 should only be used for life threatening emergencies. Non-emergency flooding concerns should be reported through standard local channels during normal operating hours.
