FORT DEFIANCE, Ariz. — Members of the 25th Navajo Nation Council honored Navajo Tribal Utility Authority Deputy General Manager Rex Kontz on March 25 for nearly four decades of public service. His retirement marks the culmination of a career dedicated to expanding essential utilities for communities across the Navajo Nation.
Kontz’s tenure at NTUA reflects a sustained commitment to strengthening infrastructure and improving access to water and other vital services for Navajo families. He worked closely with tribal leadership, program partners, and local communities to advance utility development and enhance service delivery across the Nation.
He also served eight years with the Navajo Nation Office of Environmental Health, contributing to public health and community well-being.
Speaker Crystalyne Curley praised Kontz’s leadership and lasting impact.
“Rex’s leadership is grounded in service, integrity, and a deep commitment to our people,” Curley said. “His work has improved the lives of countless Navajo families by expanding access to water, electricity, and essential infrastructure. His legacy will continue to guide our efforts as we build stronger, more sustainable communities.”
Council Delegates Shawna Ann Claw and Arbin Mitchell also recognized Kontz’s contributions, particularly his role in advancing infrastructure development and mentoring future leaders.
“Mr. Kontz set a standard for service and dedication. His leadership strengthened our communities and created opportunities by ensuring families have access to essential services. We are grateful for his commitment to the Navajo people,” Claw said.
Kontz mentored tribal leadership and NTUA staff, emphasizing collaboration, strategic planning, and results-driven service. His guidance helped shape key initiatives, including water rights planning and large-scale utility expansion projects.
“My focus has always been on serving the people and moving projects forward,” he said. “With a strong foundation in place, it’s time for the next generation to build on it and move the Navajo Nation from surviving to thriving.”
NTUA will transition its management team to maintain coordination and support for Navajo Nation leadership and community stakeholders.
