ALBUQUERQUE — The U.S. Geological Survey reported at least seven earthquakes June 17 in an area of New Mexico directly south of the greater Albuquerque metro area.
The earthquakes ranged from magnitude 2.6 to magnitude 8.8 in an area just south of Belen.
Around 4:46 am, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake tremored the ground beneath an area just west of Interstate 25 and south of Belen, about 35 miles south of Albuquerque. Then, two earthquakes followed in the area:
- 6:44 am: A 3.5-magnitude earthquake, about four miles south of the 3.8
- 7:15 am: A 3.2-magnitude earthquake, a couple miles north of the 3.5
Along the Rio Grande and on the other side, four quakes tremored the ground:
- 3:44 am: 3.3-magnitude
- 4:25 am: 3.1-magnitude, just north of the U.S. Highway 60
- 4:44 am: 2.6-magnitude
- 7:14 am: 2.9-magnitude
