ALBUQUERQUE — Speaker of the 25th Navajo Nation Council Crystalyne Curley and Navajo Nation Vice President Richelle Montoya advocated on behalf of Navajo students and educators at the New Mexico Government-to-Government Indian Education Summit, along with other tribal leaders and representatives from the Department of Diné Education, Navajo Preparatory School, Navajo Technical University, Dream Diné Charter School, and other educational institutions May 6.
The summit brought together tribal leaders, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, state officials, educators, and students to discuss strategies for strengthening educational opportunities for Native American students across New Mexico.
Discussions focused on improving academic achievement, expanding culturally relevant curriculum, and highlighting legislative actions and policy initiatives advanced during the recent New Mexico state legislative session that directly impact students and tribal communities.
Students also shared personal experiences that demonstrate the challenges and successes faced by youth in educational systems. Several students spoke about overcoming barriers, finding support through culturally grounded programs, and achieving meaningful academic and personal milestones.
Curley said that the students’ stories highlight the importance of tribal representation, mentorship, language and cultural preservation, and strong partnerships between schools, families, and communities.
“The voices of our students matter, and their experiences continue to guide our work as leaders,” she said. “When we invest in our youth, our language, and our communities, we strengthen the future of the Navajo Nation and support our people who live in urban areas.”
Tribal leaders emphasized continued collaboration between tribal nations and the state to secure long-term investments in public education, tribal education, infrastructure improvements, broadband access, language revitalization efforts, and student support services.
Curley reaffirmed the Navajo Nation Council’s commitment to advocating for policies and funding that uplift Navajo students and educators while creating opportunities for future generations.
