DWI (Third)
New Mexico State Police pulled over a vehicle that was speeding and unable to maintain its lane and eventually arrested a Gamerco man for his third DWI.
Officer Joe Roanhorse was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 491 when he observed a red Nissan Frontier traveling ahead of his unit at a high rate of speed.
His unit’s radar reportedly paced the suspect vehicle at speeds between 75 and 80 mph in a 55-mph zone. The vehicle also crossed over the right shoulder line, which led Roanhorse to pull the vehicle over and conduct a traffic stop near mile marker 2.
Roanhorse met the driver, Zachariah Manning, 56, and began questioning him. Manning reportedly showed signs of intoxication including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and smelling of alcohol as he turned over his identification. Manning also reportedly admitted drinking an unspecified amount of alcohol before driving.
Manning agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. However, he performed poorly and was placed under arrest. Afterward he agreed to take the breath test. Roanhorse transported him to the local state police office for the test, where he posted two samples of .09. A records check showed that Manning had two prior DWI arrests.
Once the paperwork was finished, Roanhorse took Manning to McKinley County Adult Detention Center, where he was booked for DWI (third), speeding (over 16-20), and failure to maintain lane.
His pretrial hearing is set for Sept. 10.
