Aggravated DWI (Second)
McKinley County Sheriff’s Office stopped a reported reckless driver and eventually arrested a Thoreau woman for her second DWI.
Deputy Miguel Bittony was dispatched to the Deadhorse Speedway at 409 Hwy. 566 in Thoreau after an employee at the store called in what they believed was a drunk driver. Bittony arrived and pulled up to the vehicle in question, a silver Ford Focus.
Bittony met the driver, Veronica Charley, 39, and began questioning her. Charley reportedly turned in the requested documentation but said she was working on getting a new driver’s license with her current one having expired in 2021. Charley also reportedly showed signs of intoxication including smelling of alcohol and having trouble maintaining her balance as she stood.
Charley stated she was on her way back home and had consumed just one can of Coors Light, but decided to stop when she saw the officer’s unit. She agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. However, she performed poorly on the tests and blew a .231 in a portable breath test.
Bittony placed Charley under arrest for DWI based on the results. After arriving at the sheriff’s office, Charley then refused to give a breath sample. Once the paperwork was completed, Bittony transported Charley to McKinley County Adult Detention Center, where she was booked for aggravated DWI (second), open container, and no driver’s license.
Her pretrial hearing is set for June 25.
