Aggravated DWI (Second)
Gallup Police responded to a call for a disorderly individual and soon arrested a Gallup man for his second DWI after he tried to flee.
Officers Warren Bowannie and Jordan Gemme responded to a call of a disorderly person on the 300 block of Vista Avenue. Another officer, Darius Johnson, responded to the scene and confirmed the identity of the suspect, Delbert Brown, 34. Johnson advised that Brown also had an active warrant for his arrest and was seen leaving the area in a silver Chevrolet Impala.
Bowannie and Gemme arrived at the site and shortly afterward Bowannie observed a vehicle that matched the calling description. The two officers waited nearby and saw Brown exit the vehicle. When Bowannie activated his unit’s emergency lights, Brown reportedly took off running toward the residence.
The officers pursued Brown on foot outside the residence to the other side. There, Brown reportedly ran into a light pole and fell. The officers were then able to detain him, and Bowannie then noted that Brown reportedly showed signs of intoxication including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and smelling of alcohol. A search of the vehicle revealed two open containers of Importers Vodka.
Brown reportedly was uncooperative and refused to answer the officers’ questions before refusing to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. Bowannie placed him under arrest and Brown continued to refuse further testing.
Once the paperwork was completed, Brown was transported to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI (second), driving while licensed revoked, open container, and fleeing a peace officer. His pretrial hearing is set for Aug. 11.
