WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The Naabik’íyáti’ Committee approved Legislation No. 0115-26 June 25, concurring with the Navajo Nation President’s acceptance of two charitable donations totaling $4,000 for the Diné Scholarship Annual Fund administered by the Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship and Financial Assistance.
The legislation strengthens ongoing efforts to expand educational opportunities for Navajo students through private philanthropic support.
The approved legislation authorizes the acceptance of a $2,000 donation from Irene R. Sperling and a $2,000 donation from the Rosalie Komes Charitable Fund.
In accordance with Navajo Nation law, donations exceeding $1,000 require concurrence by the Naabik’íyáti’ Committee before they may be formally accepted on behalf of the Navajo Nation. The funds will be deposited into the appropriate business unit accounts and distributed through ONNSFA to assist eligible Navajo students pursuing higher education and workforce training.
Legislation Sponsor Council Delegate Curtis Yanito said the donations represent more than financial contributions, stating they are investments in the future leadership.
“Every scholarship awarded opens the door to new opportunities for our students and strengthens the future of the Navajo Nation,” he said. “By accepting these generous donations, we are ensuring that more students have the resources needed to pursue higher education, return home with valuable skills, and contribute to the growth of our Nation.”
The Diné Scholarship Annual Fund provides critical financial assistance to Navajo students attending colleges, universities, and vocational institutions. The donated funds will be used exclusively for scholarship assistance in accordance with ONNSFA policies and approved budget plans, helping reduce financial barriers to higher education while supporting student achievement and workforce development.
The Naabik’íyáti’ Committee approved Legislation No. 0115-26 on the consent agenda with a vote of 17 in favor and three opposed. The Naabik’íyáti’ Committee serves as the final authority on the measure.
