Gallup Police responded to a call of a potential intoxicated driver outside a local business and eventually arrested a Gallup woman for her third DWI.
Officer Jerald Watchman was dispatched to the Walmart at 1650 W. Maloney Ave. after a caller reported a woman who appeared intoxicated and was sitting in the driver’s seat of a blue Chevrolet Cobalt with a male passenger.
He found a vehicle matching the description and met the driver, Joy Hawthorne, 39. As she spoke to Watchman, she reportedly denied drinking at first but later admitted she had consumed an unspecified type and amount of alcohol about two hours prior.
Hawthorne reportedly staggered when she stepped out of the vehicle on command. She said that she had just gotten into the driver’s seat but had not been driving. She told Watchman her mother had driven them to Walmart, but later said they had come from her home near Sky City.
The male passenger told Watchman that Hawthorne was his cousin, adding that he had just gotten off work at Fire Rock Casino when Hawthorne picked him up and asked him to talk with her. He stated he did not realize she was intoxicated and told her to park the vehicle in the lot.
Watchman then reviewed the Walmart surveillance footage, which showed the male entering the vehicle through the passenger side around 3:30 pm and the vehicle traveling to the spot where police found it.
Afterward, Watchman read Hawthorne her Miranda Rights. She agreed to speak with him but refused to perform the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. She also refused a breath test.
Based on his investigation, Watchman placed Hawthorne under arrest for suspicion of DWI. After taking her to the police department to complete the paperwork, Watchman then transported Hawthorne to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center, where she was booked for aggravated DWI (third).
Her pretrial hearing is set for Sept. 10.
