DWI (Second), Speeding
New Mexico State Police stopped a vehicle that was speeding on Highway 602 and soon arrested a Tohatchi woman for her second DWI.
Officer Joe Roanhorse was traveling northbound on the highway near mile marker 26 when he saw a gray Ford Escape traveling southbound. Roanhorse’s radar showed the vehicle was reportedly traveling about 90 mph in a 55-mph zone. He turned around to follow the vehicle, which pulled over near mile marker 24.9.
Roanhorse met the driver, Shannon Dennison, 31, and another passenger. As Dennison turned over the requested identification, Roanhorse reportedly observed Dennison show several signs of intoxication, including an alcoholic odor, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. When she exited the vehicle on command, she stated she had not consumed any alcohol prior to driving.
Dennison agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. However, she performed poorly on the tests and was placed under arrest based on Roanhorse’s investigation. The guest was released from the scene while a family member picked up the vehicle.
After arriving at the local state police office, Dennison agreed to the breath test and posted samples of .10 and .09. Roanhorse was advised that Dennison had one prior conviction. Once the paperwork was completed, Roanhorse transported Dennison to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center, where she was booked for DWI (second) and speeding (over by 31-35).
Her pretrial hearing is set for April 30.
