WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The Naabik’íyáti’ Committee approved Legislation 0032-26, authorizing almost $3.7 million from the Unreserved, Undesignated Fund Balance to reinstate operating funds for Legislative Branch programs in Fiscal Year 2026, Feb. 26.
The legislation would restore operational funding for Legislative Branch programs that was eliminated through line-item vetoes issued by Buu Nygren on Resolutions CS-44-25, CS-45-25, and CN-56-25, which established the comprehensive FY26 budget.
Legislation sponsor, Budget and Finance Committee Chair, Shaandiin Parrish said the measure marks the fourth attempt by the 25th Navajo Nation Council to secure funding for programs that have continued providing services without an approved operating budget since the initial vetoes.
“The lack of operational funding has forced Legislative Branch programs and staff to cover essential costs out of pocket,” Parrish said. “Restoring these funds will strengthen the Council’s ability to meet with constituents and hear their concerns across the Navajo Nation.”
The Naabik’íyáti’ Committee approved the legislation in the consent agenda by a vote of 17 in favor and one opposed. The measure now advances to the Navajo Nation Council for final consideration.
