Gallup and McKinley County are defined by resilience, responsibility, and a strong sense of community. At Gallup-McKinley County Schools, those values guide everything we do. As President of the GMCS Board of Education, I am proud to serve a district that educates students from a wide range of cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, united by a shared goal: preparing every student for success.
GMCS serves more than 10,000 students across one of the largest and most geographically diverse school districts in New Mexico. Our students come from urban neighborhoods, rural communities, and remote areas, and many face challenges related to distance, economic conditions, and access to resources. At the same time, our students bring remarkable strengths—resilience, creativity, cultural awareness, and a strong connection to family and community. The Board’s responsibility is to ensure our educational system recognizes those strengths and turns them into meaningful opportunities after graduation.
The recent transition in leadership to ensure continuity and strengthen the district’s focus on student outcomes has prompted public discussion. That dialogue reflects how deeply this community cares about its schools. At the same time, students deserve stability, focus, and momentum. The Board acted to maintain continuity so educators could remain centered on teaching and students could remain centered on learning. The decision was about protecting progress and keeping GMCS moving forward at a critical time.
Looking ahead, the Board remains focused on its core responsibility: improving outcomes for all students. That includes aligning leadership, resources, and accountability with the needs of our families and ensuring that progress is measurable, supervised, and subject to Board oversight. Our priorities include strengthening early literacy, expanding career and technical education, supporting college readiness, and creating clear pathways to workforce success. Our goal is straightforward and ambitious—every student should graduate with the skills, confidence, and options needed to build a strong future.
Trust and transparency are essential to effective governance. GMCS Board meetings are conducted in full compliance with New Mexico’s Open Meetings Act, and agendas, materials, and decisions are made publicly available. Transparency doesn’t require unanimity, but it does require governance that is open, lawful, and accountable. The Board remains willing to address immediate concerns while staying focused on long-term outcomes for students.
Responsible stewardship of public resources is another cornerstone of our work. GMCS continues to collaborate closely with independent and state auditors, legal counsel, and state partners to ensure sound financial management. That discipline allows us to invest where it matters most—in classrooms, educators, and student support services. While competing interests often seek to influence decisions, the Board’s obligation is to balance those perspectives and act in the best interests of students.
Public education succeeds when communities work together with shared purpose. While perspectives may differ, our common ground is clear: we want our children to succeed. GMCS is a district with dedicated educators, tremendous promise, and students capable of extraordinary achievement when given the right support and opportunity.
With steady leadership, clear priorities, and deep respect for the communities we serve, GMCS is not simply responding to challenges—we are building toward a stronger future. A future defined by opportunity, accountability, and hope for every student.
