A Continental Divide man was arrested for DWI after he reportedly stole drinks from a local gas station.
An employee at the Thoreau Speedway, located at Hwy. 371 mile marker 1, met McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Miguel Bittony in front of the store and informed him that a man had been caught stealing beer. The suspect was seen walking towards a white Dodge Ram pickup.
Bittony found a vehicle matching the description on County Road 61 and initiated a traffic stop He met the suspect, who reportedly appeared to be under the influence. He allegedly admitted to being inside the store, but said he was leaving while the driver of the vehicle was getting gas.
The driver, Tyrin Lane Begay, 26, also reportedly showed signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and smelling of alcohol. Begay exited the vehicle at Bittony’s request where he admitted to drinking one can of Twisted Tea earlier that day. He agreed to perform the Standard Field Sobriety Tests, which he failed. He was placed under arrest and initially refused a breathalyzer test.
The vehicle’s registered owner arrived later to take custody of the passenger and the truck. Begay was then taken to McKinley County Sheriff’s Office for the breath test, which recorded blood alcohol readings of 0.01 and 0.00. Despite repeatedly and emotionally asking for a second chance, Begay was transported to the Gallup McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI.
His pretrial hearing is set for March 13.
