Staff Reports During the 2026 General Election, New Mexico voters will be asked whether to approve a general obligation bond to fund higher education projects around the state, including $3 million for the renovation of Calvin Hall Center at The University of New Mexico-Gallup. General Obligation Bond 3 will ask voters to authorize the state to issue more than $230 million in bonds to fund public higher education institutions, special public schools, and tribal schools in New Mexico. Staff Reports A Navajo Nation Cross Commission Training conducted by the Navajo Police Training Academy, was held from Aug. 20–21 at the Gallup Police Department. The two-day training provided essential instruction to enhance law‑enforcement response, coordination, and collaboration across jurisdictions on Navajo Nation. Twenty-seven newly commissioned officers represented the following agencies: New Mexico State Police, Gallup Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Navajo County Sheriff’s Office and Special Agents with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Staff Reports Dallago Corp. will be adding a new waterline and gate valve at the Coal Basin PRY Building Aug. 25. To complete this work safely, the Gallup Water Department will be shutting down service for some customers that day. The water outage will affect customers in the Coal Basin community. Staff Reports UPDATE: Paul Melvin Jake has been located. Gallup Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 29-year-old man. Paul Melvin Jake is a 5′ 8″ Native American man who weighs about 135 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair. A family member reported Jake missing Aug. 22. He was last seen leaving the McKinley County Detention Center (255 Boardman Dr.). He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, and gray and black crocs. Staff Reports Due to threats to City of Gallup employees, elected officials, and infrastructure, the onlinestreaming of all meetings will be suspended until further notice as of Aug. 21. The City is aware of recent threats of arson, destruction of property, and threats to individuals named in online posts. City officials are currently working with local law enforcement, New Mexico State Police, and the FBI to investigate these threats. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., led a public outreach forum in Gallup Aug. 19 to raise awareness about expanded compensation available through the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act and help New Mexicans understand how they can apply for compensation. During the forum, Luján joined local leaders and advocates to provide information about expanded eligibility under RECA and the resources available to help New Mexicans apply for compensation.
