A Fort Defiance, Ariz. man was arrested by New Mexico State Police after his vehicle was seen swerving across multiple lanes.
Officer Terence Willie received a notice from Metro Dispatch of a white Chevrolet pickup truck that was swerving on U.S. Highway 491 near milepost 7. Willie traveled to the location to search for the vehicle, eventually finding one matching the caller description near the Marathon gas station at 24 Hwy. 264.
The truck was parked at the gas pumps with the driver, Matthew Neswood, 27, slumped over the wheel and a passenger who was also unconscious. Willie conducted a traffic stop and began speaking with Neswood, who reportedly stated they were traveling back home to Sawmill, Ariz. He also reportedly admitted to consuming an unspecified amount and type of alcohol at about 7 pm that day.
Based on his admission and showing other signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and smelling of alcohol, Willie offered Neswood an opportunity to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. However, Neswood performed poorly on the tests and was placed under arrest. He agreed to give a breath sample and was taken to the local state police office for the test, where he posted two samples of .14.
Neswood was then transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for DWI (third), no license, insurance, or registration, and open container. After a string of court dates, he was sentenced on March 26 to 30 days confinement, 96 hours of community service, an interlock device and probation totaling three years.
