Aggravated DWI (Second)
New Mexico State Police caught up to a vehicle that had reportedly collided with several others before rolling over itself, and they eventually arrested a Church Rock man for his second DWI.
Officer Terence Willie was on patrol when Metro Dispatch advised of a black GMC Acadia that had hit several vehicles on the east side of Gallup. The calling party reportedly said the vehicle was unable to maintain its lane as it traveled on Interstate 40 near mile marker 28.
The calling party followed the suspect vehicle off I-40 on exit 33 and traveled along Highway 400 where it then drove toward Fort Wingate High School. However, the vehicle reportedly tried to make a fast turn by the premises, and it ended up rolling several times. Other officers and medical staff were on the scene when Willie arrived shortly afterward.
He met the driver, Bernelle Chee, 26, who stated he had been traveling to Gallup. Willie was advised that Chee had been evaluated by EMTs at the site but refused transport to a local hospital. A passenger in the vehicle had been taken to a nearby hospital in the meantime.
An officer said that Chee became disorderly when they tried to speak to him. Chee reportedly showed signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He also said he drank a two quarter of 99 Apple prior to driving.
Chee agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests, but he performed poorly and was placed under arrest. After being taken to the local state police office, Chee agreed to the breath test where he posted samples of .20 and .21.
After receiving medical clearance from a local hospital, Chee was then transported to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI (second), driving while license revoked, open container, and failure to maintain lane. His pretrial hearing is set for June 2.
