The City of Gallup and McKinley County released a joint proclamation honoring local radio host and former owner of Sammy C’s Rockin’ Cafe Salvatore “Sammy C” Chioda.
The joint proclamation declares Dec. 6 as “Sammy C Day” in both Gallup and McKinley County.
Chioda passed away on Nov. 14 at the age of 70. He was laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park on Nov. 21.
Mayor Louie Bonaguidi read the proclamation during the Dec. 2 city council meeting, describing Chioda as “an integral and profoundly beloved member of the Gallup community” and praising his “remarkable commitment to service, local culture, our youth, and civic life.”
Bonaguidi also said the city would dedicate the conduct of the downtown Christmas tree lighting on Dec. 6 in honor of Chioda.
Councilor Linda Garcia, Dist. 1, spoke up to honor Chioda as well.
“A golden voice for Gallup has been silenced,” she said. “But Sammy C’s absence will speak loudly forever.”
