Aggravated DWI, speeding (26-30 mph over limit)
McKinley County Sheriff’s Officers stopped a vehicle that was traveling nearly 30 mph over the posted limit and eventually arrested a Gallup man for DWI.
Deputy Terence Willie was on patrol near mile marker 26 on State Highway 118 when he saw a gray Mazda 5 traveling in the opposite direction about 72 mph in a zone with a posted limit of 45. He turned to follow the vehicle, which turned onto Toltec Drive and then Church Rock Street, before stopping near the intersection of Church Rock and Elizabeth Streets.
He met the driver, Ryan Dalgai, 24, who had to be asked repeatedly to exit the vehicle. Dalgai reportedly showed signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes, smelling of alcohol, and he admitted drinking two 24-oz. cans of Coors Light some time prior to driving. A search of the vehicle also revealed an open 12-oz. can of Budweiser in the center console.
Dalgai agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests, but he performed poorly and was placed under arrest. Willie transported him to the sheriff’s office for the breath test, where he posted samples of .14 and .16.
After completing the paperwork, Willie transported Dalgai to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center, where he was booked for aggravated DWI, speeding (25-30 mph over limit), no license, insurance, or registration, and open container.
His pretrial hearing is set for Dec. 9.]
