RUNNING INTO TRAFFIC
Gallup, Sept. 2
A man allegedly ran into traffic and was almost hit by multiple cars in his effort to escape from the police.
On Sept. 2, around 4:45 pm, Gallup Police Officer Daniel Brown was on patrol when he saw a male he recognized as Corey Edward Begay, 35.
According to his report, Brown knew Begay had a warrant out for his arrest. Begay was reportedly crossing the street walking west from Heritage Plaza to the Speedway located at 701 N. U.S. Hwy. 491.
Brown drove into the Speedway parking lot and allegedly saw Begay digging through the trash at the gas pumps. The officer approached him and informed him of the warrant out for his arrest. He then placed him in handcuffs.
Metro Dispatch confirmed Begay’s warrants out of the Gallup Magistrate Court. After confirming his warrants, Brown officially arrested Begay.
As Brown was conducting a post-arrest search and counting out Begay’s money for him, the man reportedly began leaning over and coughing. He reportedly turned to his left, and then sprinted away, heading east.
Brown ran after Begay, but he stopped at the sidewalk when the man ran out into traffic on North U.S. Highway 491, nearly getting hit by multiple cars. Brown called for backup, and headed towards the nearby McDonald’s, which is where Begay had allegedly been heading.
He asked multiple people standing outside the McDonald’s if they’d seen Begay, and one man said he’d headed south.
Other officers found Begay and chased him into the ditch located at the intersection of 10th Street and Maloney Ave. They eventually lost sight of him.
Begay was eventually located under the Munoz Overpass.
After he was detained, Begay allegedly began complaining about chest pain. EMS staff checked him out, and he was deemed healthy.
Begay was booked into the McKinley County Adult Detention Center for his outstanding warrants, attempting to escape custody of a peace officer, and resisting an officer. His preliminary examination for the new charges was scheduled for Sept. 10.

Brown asked Curley, 42, if he was OK, and he said he was. The officer then informed him that the shopping cart belonged to the Alberton’s grocery store. He told him to return it.
After speaking to Curley, Brown went back to his unit and ran Curley’s name through Metro Dispatch. Metro Dispatch informed him that Curley had warrants out for his arrest.
Brown detained and arrested Curley for his outstanding warrants. Then, when he conducted a post incident search on Curley he reportedly found a small bag containing one and a half blue pills in Curley’s pants pocket. Brown identified the pills as fentanyl.

Curley was arrested for his outstanding warrants and possession of a controlled substance. His preliminary examination in Gallup Magistrate Court is scheduled for Sept. 17.

STEALING A PHONE
Gamerco, June 5
A man is facing a robbery charge after he reportedly stole another man’s phone.
On June 5, around 6 pm, McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Loren Mahkee was dispatched to a Gamero residence in the 700 block of Rust Avenue after an intoxicated man reportedly tried to steal some items from the homeowner.
When Mahkee met with the victim he said an intoxicated man, who was later identified as Redford Paul Tsosie, walked up to him and grabbed his phone. The victim reportedly said he became afraid of the man and that he didn’t know him.
The victim said he’d paid $140 for the phone when he initially bought it, and he currently pays $40 a month to use it.
Mahkee found Tsosie, 28, along Rosita Avenue. According to Mahkee’s report, Tsosie was highly intoxicated.
Tsosie reportedly said he was on his way home to Twin Lakes. He allegedly told Mahkee he didn’t have anything on him.
Mahkee placed Tsosie in handcuffs and searched him for any weapons or sharp objects, but he reportedly found nothing on him.
After Mahkee arrested Tsosie he met back up with the victim, who confirmed that Tsosie was the man who stole his phone.
Tsosie was arrested for robbery. His case was bound over from the Gallup Magistrate Court to the Gallup District Court on June 26. He failed to appear at a July 14 court hearing, so a warrant was put out for his arrest. He was served with the warrant on Sept. 2. His next court date is an arraignment scheduled for Sept. 15.
