The City of Gallup is warning utility customers about potential scam calls.
In a Feb. 20 press release, the City of Gallup stated that they’ve heard from a number of customers who received threatening phone calls regarding their utility accounts. The city want people to be beware of scammers falsely claiming to be from the City of Gallup attempting to create panic in utility customers about disconnection of services unless immediate payment is made.
The City is recommending that if anyone does receive a suspicious call, they should hang up and not engage with the caller.
They Also provided some simple guidelines people should remember
- Pass due customers will receive calls of their status, but the City of Gallup will NEVER demand immediate payment over the phone.
- If the caller demands a utility payment by prepaid debit card or wire transfer, it is a scam.
- Scammers can manipulate a caller ID display to show City of Gallup’s name or number when they call.
- If a utility customer is unsure of the status of their account, the City of Gallup recommends they contact City of Gallup Customer Care at (505) 863-1201 or visit the city’s website to identify the Customer Care phone number.
