Gallup Police responded to a call for a welfare check on a suspected drunk driver and eventually arrested a Pinehill man for DWI and abandonment of a child.
Officers Philimina Chischilly, Magael Cruz, and Vincent Thompson responded to a call for a welfare check from Travel Lodge at 1601 W. Hwy. 66. When they arrived, they were told that the suspect vehicle, a white Chevrolet Silverado, had left the scene.
Chischilly then found a vehicle matching the description shortly afterward at Panda Express, 508 U.S. Hwy. 491. When Thompson arrived, he met her and the driver, Carlandrew Eriacho, 33. Chischilly reportedly stated that she had stopped the vehicle and when she first spoke to Eriacho he had an open container of Coors Banquet in his hand.
Thompson spoke to Eriacho next, who reportedly admitted to drinking “a couple” alcoholic drinks between the hours of 4 to 6 pm the day before. Eriacho also allegedly said he was on suboxone. He reportedly showed signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and smelling of alcohol.
Eriacho agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. However, he performed poorly on the tests. After administering the tests, Thompson spoke to the calling party, who stated they called police out of concern for a young girl who was with Eriacho earlier that evening. Thompson spoke to minor next, who reportedly said that Eriacho had been drinking in Grants earlier and purchased alcohol in town along with possible narcotics.
Based on the investigation, Thompson placed Eriacho under arrest. He was taken to the police department for the breath test, where he posted two samples of .09. After the paperwork was completed, Eriacho was then taken to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for DWI, open container, and abandonment of a child.
His pretrial hearing is set for Aug. 20.
