New Mexico State Police stopped a vehicle that fled the scene of an emergency stop and arrested the Gallup driver for his third DWI.
Officer Irvonne Bahe was on patrol near mile marker 54 on Interstate 40 when he saw a red Chevrolet passenger car traveling westbound at a high speed and without one headlamp. His unit’s radar reportedly clocked a speed of about 95 mph.
Bahe pulled the vehicle over near mile marker 53 and spoke to the driver. The male he spoke to reportedly seemed confused about his responses as he answered Bahe’s questions and failed to produce the requested documents.
However, as the officer was conducting his investigation, the passenger inside the vehicle quickly moved into the driver’s seat and the vehicle took off. New Mexico State Police officers assisted with a call for support, and they were able to stop the vehicle near mile marker 27. The suspect continued to flee the scene on foot until he was caught in an open field near State Highway 118 and El Paso Circle.
The suspected drunk driver was identified as Parrish Chee, 32. As he was being detained, Chee reportedly admitted to drinking a can of Mickey’s beer and several shots of Yukon Jack whiskey, as well as later consuming narcotics with methamphetamine. He was identified through the card given by the other male and placed under arrest.
After the paperwork was completed, Chee was taken to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI (third); resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer; driving while license revoked; and open container.
His pretrial hearing is set for April 23.
