Gallup Police arrested a man after he allegedly threatened a child with a machete.
On March 13, around 2:30 pm, Gallup Police Officer Charlie Watkins was dispatched to an apartment located in the 400 block of Arnold Street after a man who was later identified as Alonzo Johnson was reportedly seen threatening people with a knife.
When Watkins arrived at the scene someone came outside and told him Johnson, 26, left the residence heading northbound.
Watkins entered the residence and met a juvenile, who said his father was asleep in a back bedroom. The boy’s father woke up and spoke to Watkins, but he admitted he didn’t know what had happened. Watkins asked to speak to the juvenile.
According to Watkins’ report, the young boy told him that he and Johnson had been hanging out in the living room when Johnson took out a machete from his backpack and began to wave it around.
The young boy asked Johnson to put the machete away, and Johnson reportedly became angry, and he began telling the boy he was going to kill him and his family.
After Johnson threatened him, the young boy woke up his mother and she allegedly kicked Johnson out of the apartment.
Officers began searching the area for Johnson, and they eventually found a man matching his description walking by the intersection of South Eighth Street and Aztec Avenue.
When officers began to approach Johnson, he ran into the backyard of a residence. Officers were eventually able to catch him in the driveway, and he was tased and arrested.
Johnson was charged with an outstanding warrant, aggravated assault, abuse of a child, and two counts of resisting arrest. His preliminary examination is scheduled for March 26.
