Aggravated DWI (Third)
New Mexico State Police officers pulled over a speeding vehicle on I-40 and eventually arrested a Lupton woman for her third DWI.
Officer Terence Willie was traveling westbound near mile marker 24 on I-40 when he observed a white Ford F-150 swerving off the road onto the shoulder. The vehicle was going about 85 mph in a 65-mph zone as well.
Willie turned to follow the truck, which pulled off at the exit at mile marker 22. The truck traveled southbound on Miyamura Overpass before pulling into the lot of the El Rancho Hotel at 1000 Hwy. 118. He approached the driver-side door and met the driver, Reshanda Baker, 30.
Baker said she and two other passengers were coming from Fire Rock Casino. Willie observed her reportedly showing signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and smelling of alcohol. She reportedly admitted to drinking two drafts of Michelob Ultras while she was driving as well as smoking marijuana about four hours prior to the stop. A search of the vehicle revealed multiple open containers of Budweiser and Smirnoff Smash.
Willie told Baker he would have her take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests, but she reportedly refused saying she would fail because she “was a buzz” and over the limit. Based on the investigation and her refusal, Baker was placed under arrest.
Baker was taken to the local state police office for the breath test, where she posted samples of .16 and .15. Once the paperwork was processed, she was then taken to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI (third), speeding, failure to maintain lane, no registration, license revoked, and open container.
Her pretrial hearing is set for Jan. 20.
